It is a teaching ministry of Asian Baptist religious educators and ministers with Student World Assembly headquartered in New York. The seminary loosely identifies itself with Southern Baptist doctrine and history and ministers in cooperation with the authority of the Churches in Asia. SBU Theological Seminary was approved and endorsed by The Asian Association of Theological Institutions and Siloam Evangelical Church of Malaysia through the late Rev. Paul Murugesu on the 25th of January 1998 as an alternative Seminary Training for Pastors and Church leaders in Asia.
