Creating awareness and Doing Justice Anyone reading an SBU Theological Seminary brochure may wonder what kind of awareness does the seminary seek to create and what exactly does the words 'the extension of Justice' mean. Being a Baptist Institution, SBU Theological Seminary has been a strong advocate of the Human Right to Religious Freedom. The fight for religious freedom in Asia is in fact the heart of the objectives and mission of the Seminary. The seminary seeks to create an awareness on the persecuted Church in Asia and of the existence of underground or house churches in countries such as Pakistan, Northern Vietnam, China, North Korea, Kashmir, India and Iran so that Christians in the other parts of Asia can learn of their predicament. SBU Theological Seminary can sympathize and fully understand the predicament of those entangled in a situation where they are not free to express themselves but have to somewhat live in disguise and go underground due to the policy of the governments of their respective nations. Underground Theological Seminary SBU Theological Seminary has in fact been operating almost completely as an Underground Theological Seminary due to its heavy involvement and ministry to the underground churches in Asia. That's what the seminary sought to convey through its statement, “doing justice to these individuals who have proven themselves to be fully dedicated to their work and calling.” The Seminary seeks to accredit the work of these individuals who are seen as deserving of such accreditation with the relevant credentials by giving them the opportunity to enroll themselves for a course so that they can continue to grow in their calling and prosper in the work that they are doing. The seminary faculty is in fact made up of ministers from both open and house churches. SBU Theological Seminary can certainly be identified as a ministry to the underground Church in Asia. (SBU Theological Seminary is still not accessible in North Korea and is currently unable to reach Iran. In areas where there are no Internet access, SBU Theological Seminary communicate with its students via correspondence/postal mail)
